 भारत की नौसेना बल की भूमिका को पहचानने के लिए 4 दिसंबर को भारतीय नौसेना दिवस मनाया जाता है।  भारतीय नौसेना द्वारा कराची हार्बर पर हमला करने के लिए 1971 में भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्ध के दौरान भारतीय नौसेना द्वारा शुरू किए गए ऑपरेशन ट्राइडेंट का स्मरण करता है।  इस दिन, कराची बंदरगाह पर हमले ने भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की पाकिस्तान पर जीत में मुख्य वास्तुकार की भूमिका निभाई।  कराची में पाकिस्तान नौसैनिक मुख्यालय पर 4 और 5 दिसंबर की रात को ऑपरेशन ट्राइडेंट आयोजित किया गया था। इस हमले ने बेड़े के टैंकर PNS Dacca सहित उनके ईंधन भंडारण टैंकों को बर्बाद कर दिया, जिसमें पाकिस्तान की प्रमुख नौकाओं में से चार डूब गए और उनके 500 नौसेना कर्मियों की मौत हो गई।
